Selling Lawful Items That Could Be Used in Unlawful Matters

Question

Assalamualaikum Sheikh, I am a software engineer focused on building applications that boost productivity for content creators. Recently, I have been working with AI to provide a feature that allows users to generate videos using artificial intelligence.I would like to seek your guidance on an ethical concern. If a user generates videos and voices featuring female characters and voices through my platform, would this be considered Haram for me as the developer and provider of the technology?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

In principle, selling or renting permissible and beneficial things is allowed, and the income earned from such transactions is lawful. If the buyer uses the item for sinful purposes, the seller bears no sin, and is not required to investigate the buyer’s intentions. However, if the seller knows or predominantly thinks that the buyer will use the item for something unlawful, it is not permissible to sell it to them.

As for mere possibility, where the item could be used for something prohibited, this does not make selling or producing it unlawful. In such cases, if someone uses it for a prohibited purpose, only they will bear the sin.

Allah knows best.
